A Guide to Act Christianly in Election Years

In my last post we explored the biblical foundation for our dual citizenship as Christians: citizens of Heaven and responsible members of earthly society. In election years, the importance of this dual allegiance becomes even more pronounced. Especially in the charged climate of 2024 with everything from lawfare to assassination attempts to selected party candidates, it is necessary to navigate these waters with grace, truth, and love.

Full of Grace and Truth

Jesus exemplified this balance perfectly. John 1:14 describes Him as "full of grace and truth." He never compromised on truth, yet His interactions were filled with grace. Whether He was engaging with the woman at the well (John 4:1-26) or challenging the Pharisees (Matthew 23:37-39), Jesus modeled how to uphold truth while extending grace.

"Truth without love is a clanging cymbal; love without truth is empty sentimentality."

Jesus's approach provides a powerful blueprint for us, especially during contentious election seasons. In a world that often values winning arguments over winning hearts, we must remember that our ultimate goal is not to conquer but to convert—not to overpower but to persuade. This means prioritizing relationships over rhetoric and compassion over combativeness. By embodying both grace and truth, we can engage in political discussions in a way that honors God and respects others, even those with whom we disagree. This balance is essential for fostering genuine dialogue and building bridges, rather than deepening divides.

Conduct on Social Media

Social media platforms often become battlegrounds during election seasons, where conversations can quickly devolve into hostility. As Christians, our online conduct should reflect the same principles we apply in face-to-face interactions. Colossians 4:6 advises, "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."

"Our digital words carry weight; and soldier on long after we wrote them."

Before posting or commenting, consider if your words are constructive, respectful, and reflect Christ's love. Engage in discussions that build bridges rather than walls, and remember that every interaction is an opportunity to bear witness to our faith.

Engaging in Civic Duties

Participating in elections is a vital aspect of our civic duty. Voting is not just a right but a responsibility. As we cast our votes, we should seek candidates who most closely align with a biblical worldview. Proverbs 29:2 reminds us, "When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan."

When engaging in campaigning or supporting candidates, do so with integrity and respect. Advocate for policies and leaders that reflect God's justice and compassion, and avoid slander or dishonest tactics.

Ready to Give a Defense

Political discussions can sometimes challenge our faith and beliefs. 1 Peter 3:15 encourages us to "always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." Our political engagement should be an extension of our witness, grounded in the hope we have in Christ.

Encouragement to Engage

For Christians who prefer not to "rock the boat," remember that disengagement is not a neutral stance. Our silence can be interpreted as acquiescence to the status quo. As bearers of the Gospel, we are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), influencing the world around us for God's glory. Engaging in civic dialogue, voting, and advocating for righteous policies are ways we fulfill this calling.

In conclusion, our participation in political processes should be characterized by grace, truth, and love. By speaking the truth in love, conducting ourselves with integrity on social media, fulfilling our civic duties, and being ready to give a defense for our hope, we can navigate election years in a manner that honors God and reflects our heavenly citizenship.

Let us rise to the challenge, encouraging one another to be active, respectful, and righteous participants in the political sphere, reflecting the character of Christ in all we do.
