What Are We Really Worshiping?

The Advent season is a time of anticipation, reflection, and preparation for the arrival of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It’s a sacred space in the year when we pause to consider what truly matters. But amid the holiday bustle, have we paused to ask ourselves an uncomfortable question: what might be standing in the way of our worship?

Advent calls us to ready our hearts for Christ, but often, our hearts are crowded with distractions. These distractions, though seemingly benign, can become modern idols—things we elevate above God, knowingly or unknowingly.

Modern distracted people join the Nativity.

What Is Modern Idolatry?

In the Bible, idolatry is clear: the worship of carved images or false gods (Exodus 20:3-4). While we may not bow to golden calves, today’s idols are no less dangerous. They are subtle, invisible, and culturally celebrated. They creep into our lives disguised as good things but slowly displace God from the throne of our hearts.

Consider these examples:

  • Materialism: The holiday shopping frenzy turns our focus to accumulating more rather than giving or reflecting on Jesus’ humble birth.

  • Self-image: Social media tempts us to seek likes and approval rather than finding our identity in Christ.

  • Busyness: We fill our calendars with activities, idolizing productivity at the expense of quiet moments with God.

  • Comfort and security: We cling to stability, prioritizing control over faith in God’s provision.

These idols distract us from what Advent is meant to foster: a singular focus on the coming King.

Advent: The Season of Re-centering

Advent offers an antidote to idolatry. It’s a season that calls us to remember Jesus’ humility and sacrifice. The King of kings left the riches of heaven to enter the world in the humblest of circumstances.

This contrast between Jesus’ humility and our culture’s often self-centered pursuits provides an opportunity for reflection. Advent encourages us to:

  • Practice Simplicity: By stepping back from the noise and excess, we can realign our focus.

  • Cultivate Generosity: Rather than accumulating, we can give to those in need, reflecting Christ’s gift to us.

  • Reclaim Worship: By prioritizing prayer and Scripture, we invite the peace of Christ into our hearts.

Turning Away from Modern Idols

Advent invites us to prepare room in our hearts for Jesus by clearing away distractions. Here are practical steps to dethrone the idols that vie for our attention:

  1. Inventory Your Worship: Take time to reflect on what occupies your thoughts and priorities. What might you be placing above God?

  2. Focus on the Advent Calendar: Engage with daily Scriptures or prayers that center your heart on Jesus’ arrival.

  3. Give Up Something for Christ: Consider “fasting” from a distraction during Advent. Whether it’s social media, unnecessary spending, or even over-scheduling, use that time to draw closer to God.

  4. Serve Others: Look for ways to serve those around you, embodying the servant-heartedness of Christ. Whether it’s volunteering, giving generously, or simply being present with loved ones, serving redirects our focus from self to others.

Returning to the King

Advent is not just a countdown to Christmas; it’s a call to examine our hearts and make room for Christ. Modern idols—no matter how subtle—can cloud our vision of the Savior. But as we intentionally prepare, simplifying our lives and re-centering our worship, we honor the King who came to save us.

As you journey through this Advent season, let Matthew 6:33 guide you:“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

May this Advent be a season of clarity, peace, and renewed devotion as we turn away from idols and toward the one true King.
